Spring means many things to many different people. Whether you’re thinking about the fact that it is tax season, all the lawn work you’ll be able to do, how you’ll need to clean up the house, or you’re just excited for less snow and more warm weather. In any case, there is a lot to think about come spring.
One thing that often gets overlooked or take a backseat, no pun intended, is car maintenance. We don’t blame you; it is not the most exciting topic or most pressing. However, make sure you at least check out these three spring car care tips.
While it is always important to regularly service your car, truck, or SUV it is even more important come spring. That is because all that wet, cold and downright nasty weather you’ve hated this winter – your car was out in that a lot and wasn’t too fond of it either. Weather like that can weaken belts, weaken brakes, and can even cause your car to use oil at a faster rate.
2. Check the Battery
Winter conditions can accelerate the draining of your car’s battery. Be sure to look for some of the tell tale signs of a weakened battery, including dimmer than usual headlights, interior lights that no longer turn on or seem less bright and power windows that seem to go up or down slower than usual. Of course these problems could be unrelated to the battery, but they are often an early indication of a failing battery. You can also check the juice this way.
3. Inspect the Tires
Tires can get worn down during a long winter of driving on slick roads, icy conditions, and salt/sand so it is important to check your tires when spring arrives. Even if you have great brakes, a tire with not enough tread can make stopping a difficult task. This CBS News article demonstrates how to use a penny to check tire tread.
